Dress Your House For Success In Chico

November 3, 2008

Looking good is important when you want to make a great impression, whether for a job interview or a social function. The same is true of a home that is on the market. When the "For Sale" sign goes up in front of your home, it should be "dressed" for the occasion.

Since the first impression will be of the front of the house, a well-groomed exterior is crucial, from the landscaping to the paint.  Think CURB APPEAL!  At this time of year in Chico you are probably very familiar with the excessive amounts of leaves that fall.  Make sure to stay ahead of them by cleaning them up frequently.  Before a showing make sure to rake up every last dropped leaf.  This will leave your house looking clean and crisp-fitting for the season!

Some other tips to help add to the curb appeal include:

  • Paint any exterior boo boos -getting a quart of custom matched paint is cheap but makes a big difference! Many paint stores, such as Home Depot, offer this custom paint matching at no additional cost.  Usually all you need is a quarter-sized swatch of the color of paint you want to get custom mixed.  To get this swatch find a non-conspicuous area where the paint might already be chipping/peeling and take a straight edge razor blade and slowly work a piece off.
  • Give the house a bath-take a hose with a nozzle attached and rinse down the exterior of your home.  Be careful though! If you have older paint you don't want to spray it too hard or you chance it just getting "blown off" by the power of the nozzle.
  • Clean the Windows-make your windows sparkle! Make sure to clean the interior of the windows too. A tip for keeping the lint at bay when cleaning windows is to use newspaper to wipe down the windows instead of a rag.
  • Fix/upgrade the little things-something as cheap and simple as replacing your old funky street address on your house with a new, crisp one! Other ideas include; adding a fresh coat of paint to the mailbox, new light fixtures added or a new doorbell knob.

The interior of your home should be clean and tastefully decorated. Take care of any minor cosmetic repairs that are needed, such as cracked plaster or peeling paint. A sparkling kitchen and shiny bathrooms, clean windows, and the absence of clutter will help your home "show well". Keeping your home looking good at all times is hard work, especially if you have children and are packing for a move. However, the dividends are impressive, because a home that looks well cared for has an excellent chance of selling quickly and for the best price.

Good advice. There are many low cost and no cost ways to improve the appearance of a house for sale, yet they are often overlooked by many sellers.
